Joe Sorbanelli - New Jersey, Achilles International

Joe Sorbanelli - New Jersey, Achilles International

Joe and Christine stay close to home and speak to the one and only Joe Sorbanelli. It's interesting to learn that a guy can start his running career by running his first "marathon" on a treadmill at a gym while watching the NYC Marathon on television. WAIT! WHAT?!

Three years later Joe started the New Jersey chapter of Achilles International in 2017. Join us as we listen to Joe's eternal optimism and "can do" spirit and understand why he started the chapter and guides Achilles' athletes.

In 2019 the New Jersey chapter held their first Hope and Possibilities race. This year they are hosting the 2020 virtual race on September 13, 2020 sponsored by U-Haul.

Joe is such a great guy, and guide! In 2019 he was the recipient of the Achilles International Guide of the Year award.

Joe Borchard: [00:00:01] welcome to the Iram because podcast, we all have a reason why we run. Each person has unique purpose to answer their, why your, why moves you? Your, why gets you across the finish line? Your why can motivate others? I run because seeks to inspire others by exploring the why of athletes who run for charitable organizations.

I'm your host, Joe Burchard. And I'm joined with my lovely cohost and my guide in life. Christine

Christine Borchard: [00:00:27] Hulu

Joe Borchard: [00:00:28] tonight, we're really excited. We have a surprise guest, somebody whom Christine, and I know very well. , this is Joe Sorbonne, Ellie. From Achilles New Jersey. He needs no introduction. Most people know. And we're welcome.

Welcome to heavy on the show tonight, Joe, how you doing?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:00:45] I'm good. How are you?

Joe Borchard: [00:00:47] Good. Good. So this is a, like we were saying earlier, this is going to be a little, , Awkward, if you will, because all of our other, a lot of our other guests, we didn't know as well as we know you, but we know that your story has inspired so many others has inspired Christine and I to be part of Achilles New Jersey.

So, , we really thought it was important to share this story. Your story with, with everybody.

Christine Borchard: [00:01:09] Well, anybody that listens to this podcast, here's your name? Cause no matter who we've talked to, we're like, well, Joe serve Annelie and we keep saying your name. So I don't know what order these are going to come out in, but I think people will already know who you are because we say your name all the time.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:01:22] wonderful. Thank you.

Joe Borchard: [00:01:24] So Joe, we're going to get right into this. , when did you start running

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:01:28] I started running in 2012

Joe Borchard: [00:01:32] and was there something. That caused you to start running? Was there, was it you woke up one day. Was there a reason?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:01:42] , when I started running, I was, , 325 pounds and I wanted to lose weight and get healthier and set a better example for my family.

Joe Borchard: [00:01:52] Holy cow, Joe, I've known you this long. I didn't realize that you were that heavy.

Christine Borchard: [00:01:56] I did know that Joe told me that one.

Joe Borchard: [00:01:57] Yeah. Holy smokes. And that was it. So what did you do? Was it a couch to five? K? Did you have a goal in mind or was it to just, I'm going to go out and run.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:02:09]  what I'm driving in my car, I would always see the people running on the side of the road and they look so happy. Then one day I thought to myself,  what, I'm going to give it a try. And, , that day I ran from my house to the corner, which is about 50 feet away. Or the next day I ran to the next corner, the next corner.

And so on

Joe Borchard: [00:02:30] Wow. That's great.

Christine Borchard: [00:02:31] So then fast forward to last year, about how many miles do you think you ran last year?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:02:36] that side, I don't know. We, we read a lot of miles. We had some good times.

Joe Borchard: [00:02:44] So, so you started running in 2012 and. How then did you, well, tell me about your first race. What was your first race that you did? Was there a goal that you set.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:02:55] So my first race was the New York city marathon. So, , I had been, I had been running and I had, , and admired the marathon runners and I had run, , for a year straight. I had run a marathon distance or more every Saturday. And, , I entered the lottery for the New York city marathon and I didn't get in.

And then after a year of complaining, one of my coworkers was like, all right, I'm tired of hearing you complain about not running a marathon. Here's this charity you're going to run the New York city marathon for this charity. I'm going to take care of all the fundraising. Like the local fire departments will we'll donate.

You go run for a good cause. Have a good time. And that's what I did.

Joe Borchard: [00:03:41] And what year, what year was that marathon?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:03:43] 2015.

Joe Borchard: [00:03:45] So let me just pass

Christine Borchard: [00:03:46] my first New York city marathon as well.

Joe Borchard: [00:03:48] Yes, it was that's right. It was great weather that day, if I remember correctly. So, so let me just go back a second, Joe. So, so you started in 2012 to just run, to get healthy, to lose weight, and you set your first goal to run a new York's. The, to run the New York city marathon.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:04:03] I was one of those people who thought I would never run a race. I wasn't familiar with, , A culture of running racist. And I was like, ah, why would I run a race where I could just run out my front door and run whenever I feel like it. But, , in 2014 I ran the random marathon on the treadmill and, , the gym in Inglewood watching the New York city marathon.

And then I was like,  what? I got, , doing this. I want to be a part of it. And it changed my life.

Christine Borchard: [00:04:34] I didn't know that I did know though. I do know that you went on a cruise with your family and you did some kind of crazy training there as well.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:04:42] , I did go on a, a cruise, , three weeks before the New York city marathon. So I had to do my 20 miler and I ran it on a track lowest like one point, , , A mile in rough seas. So I felt like I was always running up the Hill or down Hill.

Christine Borchard: [00:05:01] Oh, my God.

Joe Borchard: [00:05:04] I knew the story about the ship. I didn't know that you ran a marathon. I'm at the gym at Anglewood while watching the New York city marathon. Oh my God. You're a glutton for punishment. Oh, I'm sure. When, when, when you ran. So, let me just go, go back one more second to, so, so what charity did you run?

The, the 2015 New York city marathon for

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:05:27] it was concerned

Joe Borchard: [00:05:28] funny. So many people share the same story of how they got affiliated with, ,  and it starts with a simple question of, Hey, what, what are you guys all about?

And right Christine, how many of our, our, , people we've interviewed almost sheriff, sheriff, very similar story.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:05:46] Yeah, they looked like they were having so much fun and I was trudging along, suffering, running,

Christine Borchard: [00:05:53] remember Joe, I was the first things I said, I'm like, there's this group of people out there and I have to look more into it and it definitely helps to see the bright

Joe Borchard: [00:06:03] So, so in 2016 you ran a marathon again, that's when you that's when you were first introduced to, to the, , Achilles and then, , What about 2017?

Did you run the marathon in two seven, 2017? Is that when you started running with Achilles? 2017? Is that when you started

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:06:19] so

right after the New York city marathon, I inquired to see if I could join if I could

join

Achilles. And

I started going to the, Achilles new York's workouts and there I met, Barbara Brown. And

she asked me to run the 2017 marathon with her and, , myself and Carolyn riles. We, we ran it with her and, , it was an incredible, , time.

We, , we trudged along, she never quit and we had a great marathon. And during our 26.2 miles, she had mentioned to me how life would be better if. There was a way that she didn't have to travel to the city every Saturday for it

can Lee's that if only there was, an Achilles of New

Jersey and at that time I said,  what, we're gonna do it.

And so,

, I inquired with the Achilles and. Nobody said no, and they, , gave me everything. I needed to start a chapter and we, , started, , Italy's New Jersey. We showed up in, , saddle river County park with just myself, Barbara Brown, one other guide. And then, , batty Monaco showed up. So he was our first Achilles New Jersey athlete.

I inquired with the Achilles and.

Christine Borchard: [00:07:44] No, I was just going to say, , I came around shortly, , No, I was just going to say, , I came around shortly, , from the beginning. I want to say maybe March.  , first I remember looking it up and there was nothing in New Jersey. Well, there was a nber, but then no one got back to me, but it but it wasn't you, I guess somebody started it earlier and.

Whatever happens. So happens. So then I said, Oh, it's not meant to be. And then some time went by and I remember looking it up again. And then your name was there as a contact person, like lots like lots of different names and. , a year ago when I looked it up and I remember I emailed you or Facebook emailed you or Facebook mentioned, and I left you a rese. I think I I think I wrote, like, I've been teaching special needs children for teaching special needs children for 20 years. I'm a mother of four. Like I gave you all of my information because I was so nervous because I didn't know anything about it. And I remember you just wrote, come and meet us. And I was like, okay. And then I got all dressed up that morning and I went to the park, but I definitely remember being nervous and typing up a rese.

Joe Borchard: [00:08:35] Oh, nervous about that.

I want to be accepted into this group.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:08:44] well, that was no coincidence. That was a divine intervention that, that, ,

Christine jogged into Achilles New Jersey and, Port charred family as definitely, propelled our chapter

two, , three years later where we are now. we went from being the new kids on the block to hopefully hopefully we're a trendsetter and, our chapter is doing amazing.

Thanks to you, Joe

Christine Borchard: [00:09:08] No, I thank you for starting at Joe, because it was something I definitely wanted to do. I just had no interest of. I'm not really city savvy. I didn't, I didn't have any interest to going to say. And my husband would say to me, Joe would say, I'll take you in, , you can. And I said, no, I don't. If I'm going to do it, I don't want to do it just every now and again.

Cause that's what it would  would be if I went into the city and then, like I said, one day I looked in there, you weren't, and it was a

Joe Borchard: [00:09:31] well, Christine. I mean, it's not only there you were. I mean, the other piece that people need to realize was you were really wanting to do it. So then when she looked it up, You happen to meet, we live in the same town where you were holding the workouts.

So, I mean, when you talk about divine intervention, I mean, Christine looked it up and when she, she touched base with you and you were like, Oh yeah, we run into set up of a park and Rochelle park. We were like, wait a second. We live in Rochelle park. So it was, it was definitely meant to be I'm sure

Christine Borchard: [00:09:59] Barbara Brown at Maddie.

It was just like, I remember my first and I came home and all I did was talk about Joe and Barbara. It was a great day.

2017. So in 2017, you ran with Barbara Brown  ran and I do know that something else happened that day. I think you helped some other, a young lady across the lady across the finish line.

Am I correct by, is that the year Joe? Joe?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:10:21] that's it. That's a year. Wait, we, , , Barbara, Carolyn and myself, we had a good marathon and we enjoyed ourselves when we met many other, , Runners and Achilles athletes and guides along the way

Christine Borchard: [00:10:37] And then there was somebody else that might've needed a little help that day, Joe.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:10:42] there.

Christine Borchard: [00:10:43] He just want to talk about it because, but I know it's a great story, Joe. You have to share it.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:10:49] So, when, when we were running a long, we saw a runner on a prosthetic leg who, who fell. And then we had a little team meeting and we decided we had a helper and, , she didn't speak English. So we just kind of figured out, , what we were going to do. And we, , just helped her along to, , the next aid station, where they were able to adjust our prosthetic leg and she jogged off into the sunset and she finished her marathon and,

Christine Borchard: [00:11:26] you're a wonderful man. I understand that you might've helped carry her a little bit. You're such a good man. If you don't know anything about Joseph,

I'm surprised Joe's even doing this interview because he does not like to, I'm telling the audience that you're just not in it for yourself and you don't really like to brag about yourself. So I will, for you, apparently you had to carry this young lady for, was it a couple miles, Joe?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:11:54] a little bit.

Christine Borchard: [00:11:55] So we're going to fast forward. So this young lady was from Mongolia. Am I incorrect by saying she started an Achilles chapter there because.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:12:07] I believe she already was the chapter leader of Achilles Mongolia, which is, Huge. And when we came to meet each other, each other, , like a few months later because, I kept getting friend requests from someone from, someone from, Mongolia. And I just think that I don't know anyone from my goal here, so I kept declining.

but then someone sent me a name bell bell and made the introduction because we never know each other's name. We never knew who,  Each other was, was, we just knew we were Achilles for one one family and, we were going to help each other through the marathon, but, turns out she's a cancer survivor and she started,

Kelly's Mongolia and they have an open possibility and they're a thriving international

Christine Borchard: [00:12:50] Fantastic

Joe Borchard: [00:12:50] story. That is, that's a great story. I'm not sure if it's it's right up there with running the, , a long distance run on the cruise ship, but that's a great story. so, so you start the chapter in 2000, 2017, you have a few members and you do your workouts out of the County park. So. The chapter's grown.

It's, it's grown significantly. What were some of the things like, how do you promote the program? How do you promote the organization that that's allowed it to grow as fast as it has?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:13:27] well, , I just dream big and people are like, Yourself and Christine Christine and, Raj and Mark, ,

so many people who've been with us all along. You guys who are, who have have made the chapter,

such a big success,

and and our athletes are amazing. I, know, , but I, I couldn't go on this podcast without mentioning, Matthew Monaco, , our first workout back in, the, our first workout back in, late  27, 13.

I wasn't sure  if I was doing the right thing, automatic Monica showed up showed and everything changed, said

he's the inspiration for our chat chapter. He's, always positive. He's, exciting. He makes happy to be around the kid just warms my heart.

Joe Borchard: [00:14:15] Yeah, he does.

Christine Borchard: [00:14:16] I'm just smiling because he's one of my favorites. I just love being around him. I like when he sees you, Joe, when we do our zoom meetings, he gets so excited to see you.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:14:25] I'm equally excited.

Joe Borchard: [00:14:27] tell you a quick story, John, I don't know if you heard this one. So we were doing our zoom, our zoom meetings, and, Maddie was talking about what he was making on Friday, what he was, bacon. So Christina and I said,  what? And  said,  what? And I was

I was teasing him. I said, Oh, I'm going to come over there and get one of those muffins.

So as soon as we hung up with the

as we hung up with the

zoom call, we got right in the car, we drove 20 minutes drove 20 minutes to his house and we showed up at his door and he was like, wait a second. I just saw you on, so now you're here. It's so great. He was so happy to see us. It was such a good time. He brings it. He He brings it. He definitely lights up a room for sure.

Christine Borchard: [00:15:04] Everyone. I could talk about everybody, everybody. I look, I'm sad that we haven't had ARRA Sunday had ARRA Sunday

runs, but I, I miss everybody.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:15:12] yeah, yeah,

we, we have a good chapter. We have some, really wonderful

athletes and some really wonderful guides. And, we're grateful for that.

Christine Borchard: [00:15:21] And now, Joe, your whole family is involved in running as well. It's not just you, not just you, your, I am acting like, I don't know. Cause I do know,  know your whole family involved. I know your whole family involved.

Charlie, Ryan, the Ryan, the

marathon, and Rebecca, are you going to get your youngest daughter to run at some point? I know she runs with us, but not the marathon yet.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:15:41] Yeah, she says it's, she said, she's not doing it. It's too much running, but we thought hope for her. And, Madeline did guide the, New York city hope and possibilities, last year. And she did manage to get, or her picture on the cover of, New York road runners magazine. So, ,

Christine Borchard: [00:16:02] That's the best she did the four mile and she's the poster child.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:16:12] that  day we did,

but I am, I am very grateful that, Ruth, Rebecca, Charles and Madeline

are,  Like Kelly's guides Like Kelly's guides and, living a life of service. It makes me very proud as a you and Joe should be as well where you're two wonderful boys coming out, guiding. They're amazing. They're amazing.

Christine Borchard: [00:16:36] It's good. I, , we try to, , get the teenager out of bed and teenager out of bed and

not contribute to society, but it's getting harder. The, with each year it's getting harder. Not because he doesn't want to, it's just hard to get a teenager out of bed. But no, it's a great it's family fair. it's just, it's just, I can't talk about it enough when we get out there and we get to see everybody and I know, other guides bring their family members and  even the athletes, they come with their family.

It's just one big family.

Joe Borchard: [00:17:04] Well, that's it. , you hear the term so often, like your Achilles family. And that's what it is. You, you, you, you become so tied to you become so tied to these people and you're invested in not only their athletic accomplishments, but just them as a person. And we get to learn so much about each, each

other.

And like I said, you really become invested in than I'm in. And they, I do refer to them as my family because, it's that's part of the group and it's such a great organization to be part of. so Joe. In 2019, I know you ran the New York city marathon and you ran it with, your wife, Ruth, your daughter, Rebecca, your son, Charlie.

that must have been something that must've been pretty special time. All four, he is coming across the finish line sharing in that experience.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:17:51]  what? I'm very proud of that. in two, in 2018, I, I ran with a route. And the in Jenny Wong that there are novel, but but

2019, when Joe chard and myself guided Declan, Brian, the Irish Daredevil, that was an amazing experience. And, like, to have, the whole Achilleas New Jersey family out there guiding, different athletes and seeing them on the.

Chorus was an amazing day, but I, but I have to tell you, , I was very relieved when I crossed the finish line. And if you read the story there, Charles server not only crossed the finish line, cause I had my doubts because he was training at the snack bar, the food court, how that school

Christine Borchard: [00:18:43] He made it.

Joe Borchard: [00:18:44] He made it. He wasn't letting you down. There's no way.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:18:49] I'm really

Joe Borchard: [00:18:50] great. Now , in 2019, Achilles international awarded you, you, the 2019 guide of the year. as in respect for all the efforts that you've done for the organization, that must've been a. Quite an honor.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:19:07] I was very honored and I was very hbled, but that, award really. Was

Was for our whole chapter to recognize all the good that, that, Kelly's New Jersey does. So I feel like I kind of accepted that award on our

Christine Borchard: [00:19:23] don't know, Joe, we're all wonderful people, but you're just a little bit extra wonderful. Like I just, like you said, you dream big, like Joe's like, I'm going to order 20 shirts. You're like no order 2000 and go, we'll say, well, , we only have a hundred know, we only have a hundred people for the race. I'm going to get them up.

Get race. I'm going to get them up.

Get 200,000 metals. metals. They have such like this and it works for you. Like for you. Like whenever, like, I don't know, Joe is going to be enough guides. There's going to be enough guides. Like you just have like this

gentle piece about you and, and things happen for you things happen for you because you're just such a good hearted man. It's true.

It really is true. And  what, like you just, like, if somebody says, I want to run in Chicago, get in my car, I'll drive you to Chicago. Like you just make things happen for people you've gone to Disney. You just, I don't know. . You just, you go,

I go to the park and run. You just go that extra mile. So you definitely deserve that award

Joe Borchard: [00:20:17] for sure.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:20:18] well, thank you, Christine, but  we can't talk about Chicago without good about yourself and Jamie When you get to Chicago, that was quite

the

Christine Borchard: [00:20:27] know who I brought it up at one of the podcasts that I said, Oh, I think I was telling ' Erin, I was saying that I felt like we were in an episode of the real world. We had so much fun chill. That was a great trip.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:20:39] We can't even can't even talk about it on the podcast.

Christine Borchard: [00:20:42] giggled.

Joe Borchard: [00:20:44] I think that's gotta be part of like season two this year, it looks like Chicago, it's going to happen. I say you guys try to recreate it. We get, recreate it. We get, , ,

Christine Borchard: [00:20:53] can't recreate that magic. There was so much so, , just so everybody's just so everybody's listening, myself and, Jamie, we guided, An athlete. And then with Joe, and then there then there were a couple other athletes that came that came out that might not have ran the marathon, but were running the five K.

So Joe just piled piled everybody in this car and drove everybody there right after running the, run for the cows marathon. Joe, was it the half?

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:21:16] I

can't remember. we races,

Joe Borchard: [00:21:18] you

Christine Borchard: [00:21:19] ran a race and then got in the car if I remember correctly and you just drove everybody to Chicago and it was a great time.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:21:26]  what you're right. It was right after the wineglass

marathon.

Christine Borchard: [00:21:30] in the car and drove.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:21:32] Should we just go to Chicago straight from New York or should I come home first? But were

you coming home

first? So

Christine Borchard: [00:21:40] And then after Chicago, we went right into New York city marathon. So it was just like every other weekend. That's why you have guided the year. Joe. Sarver not

Joe Borchard: [00:21:51] what, what are some of the highlights for you? I want to talk about ask two questions. Like one, what's a highlight for you for the chapter, and then what's a highlight for you as a race that you ran. So you can take them in any order.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:22:03] Okay. Well for our chapter, not highlight for me was for me was the New Jersey hope and possibility. last year,  you joke recharge where our race director and it was an amazing day, an amazing event. And, , we did it as kind of a fundraiser, but really our real mission was to, Raise awareness for are differently abled athletes.

And for people who don't know the mission of Achilles in New Jersey is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream running events, in order to promote personal achievement. While our programs focus on running, the truth is running is simply the tool for our accomplishment, our main objective to bring hope.

Inspiration and the joys of achievement to all. And I really believe Joe, with your, all of your hard work are to New Jersey, hope and possibility that exactly that.

Joe Borchard: [00:23:07] Thanks, Joe. That was, that was definitely a group effort, but,

Christine Borchard: [00:23:11] well, the hope and possibility race is just praying. Like. Everybody out. It's not that it's a strictly an Achilles event, but everybody comes out from Achilles. So it's so great to see like New York and Connecticut and everybody that, , everybody's from Achilles. So wearing a yellow shirt and it really is like a family event.

Joe Borchard: [00:23:27] It was a great day. Almost felt like a family.

so the, the, the idea for. But hope and possibility race came about as Joe, you and I, as we normally do on Sundays, Sundays, sometimes we guide, , other athletes together, , other athletes together, but but we were on a training run and Joe just comes up with these ideas and he poses them in such a way where he's like, Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we did our own race so we can have people.

And John is a great idea now. I know nothing about being a race director and somehow he pulled the Jedi mind trick on me. And next thing I know we were organizing a race together and  what, Joe you're right for our chapter. It came out to be such a great day and it was such a celebration. And our mission from day one with that race was always.

We wanted to bring awareness. And I think that's exactly what we did.

Christine Borchard: [00:24:23] Joseph Vannelli does have those mind tricks. Joe, do  what my husband does now? Do you remember once you brought up, like maybe having like, , some kind of business where our Achilles athletes would work and then, , live.

well, Joe Borchard, we still talk about it. Like when we drive around town or we drive, Joe, we'll see a building, he was like, I wonder if that would be a good building. Maybe we could have like a coffee shop and they could live upstairs. So you planted the seed in Joe's head. And, at some point maybe that will happen as well.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:24:51] I'm confident that, the charges can make it. That happened that I, I think about it all the time when I'm, running, unfortunately now with the COVID, I'm running a lot solo, but at least New Jersey, we do dream big and we think about, we need to, have that Achilles house somewheres for our athletes with disabilities, Where they could live and run and grow old together. , I know we've talked about it many times, but for, especially for the,  parents of athletes with autism, it's very, it must be very, , Fearful for them to wonder what happens to my child after I'm gone. after I'm gone. And we'd like to create an Achilles house or something of that where, , they could live together, get services and, run

together.

And, maybe we create

some kind of business where they could, where they could work. And it's so us that are just surviving in life. They're

thriving

at life.

Christine Borchard: [00:25:49] Well, you planted the seed and Joe will see a building go, , maybe we can have a sneaker store and they can work toward it. So you definitely planted the seed. So when you tell Joe things, , it's almost like you give Joe the go ahead and then he runs with it.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:26:04] He can he make, he makes it happen

makes it happen and I'm confident and strive to make and strive to this happen. We have, between, Christine and Joe, we have, have, On our Achilles board, we have Dawn and Adele and Mark and Jennifer, and, , you you

know, we get the right

the right

mix of people where everybody brings something different to the table.

I think we're going to get this done and it all starts with our hope

starts with our and possibility. race where we're raising awareness. And,  fortunately fortunately

this year we have a, , corporate sponsor, you all, which all, which is an amazing company. And even though, we're going to go going to go

virtual for this year only, only,

they're still gonna sponsor us.

And we're going to have a great race since September, and we're gonna raise awareness, and we're gonna raise but also, Raise some funds for our four big dreams.

Joe Borchard: [00:26:54] That's great. I'm looking for.  Challenge accepted.

Joe Borchard: [00:28:56] You did a great job there, Joe. Excellent job.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:28:58] thank you. Can I add, add some things says that, I have a secret agenda to promoter, , New Jersey hookah

Joe Borchard: [00:29:05] Edwin floor

is yours.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:29:07] I would like to say that it's September, we are having, , virtual, New Jersey hope and possibility. And, we're hoping to raise awareness for our differently abled athletes.

And we also are, hoping to raise some funds. It's our long. Range goals. Achilles New Jersey has a PayPal like Kelly's new new jersey@gmail.com. If anyone feels so inclined to make a donation, a hundred percent of the money goes to are differently. Abled that points.

Joe Borchard: [00:29:39] It's a great cause. It is.  , I got one more thing. I want to say that we're, we're on a killers in New Jersey and it's on Facebook and Instagram. And, we'd love to have, anybody in a Tristate area who wants to come out for A run, whether they're an athlete or a guide we'd love to, meet them and introduce them to introduce them to

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:30:00] New Jersey.

Christine Borchard: [00:30:01] Yeah, do I know we interviewed,

I forget who, but somebody was saying how they, went to different rehab centers and they had information there and they left that information out and then they would give it to some of the patients and then they would be able to seek out the Achilles. So I was thinking about that, maybe making a pamphlet or something that, maybe making a pamphlet or something that we could maybe out, we could always use more athletes we could always use more athletes and more guides.

The more, the more the merrier they say.

Joe Sorbanelli: [00:30:26] Yeah. I think Yeah. I think with, the work that, Christine and Joe, you're doing what? doing what? You're a podcast. You're really accomplishing our mission of, creating awareness for Achilles. So I think we're gonna, we're going to grow. We're going to get more athletes, so we're gonna need more, guides and, there'll be strengthened nbers and we'll be able to do, even more amazing things.

Joe Borchard: [00:30:48] I'm sure. 2020. It's  Wallace had a Rocky start. I know things are really going to take off for off for the Achilles New Jersey chapter in 2020. For sure.

Christine Borchard: [00:31:03] I'm looking forward for

for this, to get to get

better so we can all get back out there again.

Joe Borchard: [00:31:08] So there you have it. Tonight's episode. we spoke with, Joe Sorbonne, Ellie from Achilles New Jersey.

Christine Borchard: [00:31:13] I'm going to add, I know we've said his name a couple of times, like through conversations.

I'm like, wow. When I met Joe store

Benelli so anybody who's listening to this podcast now has a voice to the, Joe ,

Joe Borchard: [00:31:26] Joe soar Benelli

he believes Achilles yellow. yellow. He is mr. Achilles is mr. Achilles and, Like you said, if you have an opportunity come out to Achilles New Jersey, meet up with Joe Joe and, some of the other guides and athletes, you won't be disappointed.

because

time to connect with Hela and get an update on the run everyday challenge. Take it away.

Unknown: [00:31:45] Hello.

Hellah Sidibe: [00:31:45] Welcome to week seven. So it's very important that we recuperate. We let our muscle heals a little bit. It does not mean to take time off because we do not want to sit back all the hard work we just did. So we're going to slow it down a little bit for week seven. That means that go for most 70 to 80% of your run, conversational pace, and take this week off from any speed.

Run, just make sure you're doing the regular run, conversational pace or steady, just to focus on muscular strength and skeletal strength. So slow yourself down and run comfortably and then build up your endurance. I'm more of a, aerobic fitness than anything for week seven. So slow it down. And then when we get to week eight, we're going to pick it back up again and see if we can even hit at least 10 miles during that week.

If you guys are on social media, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, make sure you follow me. every day of my run, I usually put a little Instagram story, to help motivate people get going. Cause I know it's hard. It takes a lot of people to help one individual get to their goals. So I share my thoughts about my run and what we can do to push through and a daily run or anything that we're facing in life.

I'm also on YouTube actually I post every week. every Saturday is when we put up videos. So the most recent project I just worked on was the New York city subway system challenge. So the length of the New York city subway system is 245 miles. So from Memorial day to labor day weekend, they give you that time to spend, to see if you can cover 245 miles.

So for me, I decided to challenge myself and do it within a week. So I was covering 35 miles a day for a week, and I decided to dedicate each one of those 35 miles, each day to send individual who were, profiled because of the color of their skin. And I wanted to bring more awareness to that. So that's the latest project that I worked on.

I have a YouTube video and it's a pretty. Decent, long video, about 28 minutes. So it shares my whole journey, me getting up as early as five in the morning to start the run, to cover 35 miles a day for seven days. So check that out if you have some time as well. Thank you.
